Once owned by affluent Florentine families, Al Castello is an ochre-coloured Medici villa where Elizabeth Taylor stayed. Eight bedrooms, including one wheelchair-accessible room, feature antiques and four-poster beds. A ballroom, library, five drawing rooms and two dining rooms retain floral upholstery, leather-bound books and gilt-framed paintings. Formal gardens offer shaded seating beside a gated, 12-metre infinity pool overlooking Tuscany. Florence is visible from the villa and less than 30 minutes away by car. Nearby San Polo di Chianti has an 11th-century church; the Chiantigiana leads through vineyards and olive groves towards Greve’s Saturday market, Panzano’s butcher Dario Cecchini and hilltop Radda.

The ground floor has three living rooms of differing formality. The most formal, the yellow room, includes a fireplace and distant views of Florence.
This floor also contains a traditional Tuscan kitchen, a formal dining room seating up to 18, an informal dining room and a guest bathroom.
A ground-floor bedroom is wheelchair-accessible and has a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom.
The first floor contains three en-suite bedrooms: one twin and two doubles.
The second floor has three further bedrooms: the Liz Taylor Suite, with a fireplace, en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe; two twin bedrooms sharing a bathroom; and an additional double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.
Two additional sitting rooms include one with access to an outdoor covered loggia.

Minimum stays are 3 nights in April, May, October, November and December; 5 nights in June, July, August and September; and 4 nights over Christmas and New Year. The approach road is unpaved, well maintained and suitable for standard vehicles. Young children should be supervised at all times because parts of the estate have unprotected slopes and drops. Three friendly, well-behaved cats and a dog live on the property, contributing to its homely character. The owner occupies a fully independent wing with her own entrance and garden. She respects guests’ privacy and is available to help if needed. The pool opens from May to September. Use outside these months is available on request and may carry an additional charge. Pool heating is available on request only from October to April; the cover must remain on whenever the pool is not in use. A staff member opens and closes the pool daily to maintain temperature and energy efficiency. Electricity and air-conditioning are included up to 1,250 kWh per week. Air-conditioning serves the bedrooms and main living room. Heating carries an additional charge. Local regulations require city tax to be paid on site in cash, at approximately €2.50 per person per night. Outside chefs are not permitted. A private chef can be arranged on request for an additional fee.
