In UNESCO-protected Val d’Orcia, Podere Il Sogno overlooks clay hills, grassland, cypresses and Pienza. Two Italian sisters bought it in 1999, rebuilding stonework and beams. Antiques, art, handmade bedroom textiles and loanable straw hats reflect their tastes. A semicircular vegetable-and-herb garden, two bikes, hammocks, daybeds, table tennis, fitness facilities and a long heated saltwater pool encourage outdoor days. Welcome dinner and daily cleaning are included. Under ten minutes’ drive away, Pienza offers Pecorino and Renaissance architecture commissioned by Pope Pius II in the 15th century to transform his birthplace, Corsignano. Nearby excursions include Brunello-producing Montalcino, Montepulciano and Bagno Vignoni’s thermal waters.

The details

Six double bedrooms occupy the ground and first floors, reached via various steps and staircases. Each has an ensuite or an adjacent bathroom.
One of the three ground-floor bedrooms can be arranged with twin beds.
The spacious open-plan living area includes a sitting room and a TV room.
The dining room seats 12 and adjoins a small kitchen. There is also a main Tuscan kitchen and a third, smaller kitchen.
A billiard room has a fireplace. Upstairs, the first floor contains three further double bedrooms, one with a large hot tub.
Outdoor spaces include a covered dining area, several seating corners and an 18m saltwater pool with daybeds around it.
There is a table tennis table and a gym equipped with wall bars, a punching bag and a massage table.
