Built by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, Villa Balbiano occupies a two-hectare peninsula on Lake Como’s western branch and is its largest private residence. Its history encompasses banquets, dances, literary gatherings and film productions, including Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci (2021). Cardinal Durini’s 17th-century library ceiling frescoes remain untouched; Jacques Garcia redesigned the six suites with giltwood, marble and damask silk. A frescoed terrace overlooks grounds with fountains and statues. Private charters and taxi boats connect guests with Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna. Nearby discoveries include Villa d’Este, Villa Carlotta’s botanical gardens and Daniel Libeskind’s Life Electric; George Clooney’s house and the Casino Royale villa are visible from the water.

On the ground floor are a spacious frescoed entrance hall, a library, three salons, a winter garden opening directly onto the lake, a heated indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling lake views, a formal dining room seating 12, a covered outdoor terrace with a fireplace, a family kitchen, a professional kitchen, a chapel, a gym, a wine cellar and two guest bathrooms.
The first floor contains a double-height music room with a Steinway concert grand piano and fireplace, a kitchenette and two suites. The main suite includes a super king-size bed, private sitting room, dressing room, marble bathroom with a bath and shower, and a large terrace facing the lake. The Chinoiserie Suite has a super king-size bed, walk-in wardrobe, vanity table and garden views.
Four additional double suites, each with an en suite bathroom and views of the lake, garden or pool, occupy the second floor. Access is via the gallery above the music room or the lift.
The exterior comprises two hectares of formal gardens, a heated outdoor pool, a private pier and a boathouse.

Extra notes

The minimum stay is seven nights in high season and three nights in low season. A deposit of 50% is payable when booking to secure the reservation. A €35,000 security deposit is required. It is returned within 30 days of departure, provided no damage is reported. Both check-in and check-out take place between noon and 2pm. Arrivals or departures outside this window require advance arrangements and may incur additional charges. Events require prior request and are subject to special fees.
