Built for Pope Alexander VII, Villa Cetinale was designed by Carlo Fontana, Bernini’s pupil, in the wooded hills west of Siena. Its Roman Baroque façade, Hercules statue and cypress avenue frame interiors with fireplaces, books and antiques. All 13 bedrooms have ensuite or adjacent bathrooms; many feature four-posters and freestanding baths. Restored over decades by the late Lord Lambton and recently refurbished, the estate includes a chapel, loggia and gardens admired by Penelope Hobhouse. Wisteria, topiary and wildflowers lead towards Montagnola Senese hiking country and the Thebaid woodland, which hosted 17th-century Palio races during unrest in Siena.

Ground floor: a dining room opening to the garden, a bar, a fully equipped kitchen with a dining area, a living room with TV, and one double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom containing a bathtub and separate shower.
First mezzanine: two bedrooms, one with an ensuite bathroom with a bath, the other with a private bathroom along the hallway. Access to the bedroom with the bath is through the other bedroom.
Second mezzanine: two bedrooms, one with a single bed and one with twin beds, each with an adjacent bathroom.
First floor: a dining room, a very large living room connected to the garden by a grand staircase, and a fully equipped kitchen. There are three double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, all with bathtubs.
Second floor: a library and a TV room overlooking the garden. The five bedrooms comprise two doubles with ensuite bathrooms and bathtubs; one twin with an adjacent bathroom with a tub; and a double and a twin that can be interconnected and share a bathroom with a tub.
Limonaia: a small gym and a table-tennis table beside the estate’s private chapel.

Extra notes

The first mezzanine is reached by the marble staircase off the dining room. The second mezzanine is accessed by a staircase between the kitchen and TV room, or through a concealed door in the Red Bedroom. Food and beverages are excluded from the accommodation rate. Daily meal charges are €160 per adult and €80 per child aged up to 10. Breakfast is compulsory and costs €35 per person per day. Drinks and wine are charged separately according to consumption. Events incur additional fees. The approach road is unpaved and in fair condition. Music is allowed subject to local regulations and must stop by 1 am. City tax must be paid on site in cash under local regulations, at approximately €2.50 per person per night. The minimum stay is one week, Friday to Friday. From November through April, stays of at least 4 nights are permitted. Portable air-conditioning units for bedrooms are available on request.
